What to do during the Christmas holidays: the best outings

On December 21, the Christmas holidays will start all over the country: the perfect moment to go out together! So plan a few fun outings during your days off. Do you want to do something, but don't know what yet? Don't worry, in this article we will give you inspiration for all kinds of fun winter outings.

Visiting Christmas markets

Maastricht, Valkenburg, The Hague or Haarlem: many cities have Christmas markets planned. If you are crazy about the Christmas season, this is the place to be. Who knows, you might make it your goal this winter to visit as many as possible! Various Christmas markets take place on these dates:

• Amsterdam: December 12 to December 26
• The Hague: December 5 to December 23
• Haarlem: December 13th to December 15th
• Leiden: December 14th to December 22nd
• Maastricht: November 28 to December 30
• Valkenburg: November 15th to December 29th

In addition to these locations, there are even more Christmas markets throughout the country! Depending on where you live, you may have to drive quite a bit to visit a Christmas market. Don't have a car yourself? The locations are often easily accessible by public transport. Or rent a shared car , especially if you plan to do a lot of shopping at the market. This way you have enough space to take all your stuff with you.

Take a winter walk

Both elsewhere in the country and close to home: you can take a nice winter walk anywhere. Take your partner and kids to the park around the corner or travel to beautiful walking locations such as the Utrechtse Heuvelrug or the Brabantse Biesbosch. Make sure you wrap up well before you go out. That way you stay nice and warm and can optimally enjoy the fresh outdoor air.

A winter city trip

Want to get away for a few days? Go on a city trip in your own country! There are many cities that are transformed into a real paradise in the winter, such as Den Bosch and Utrecht. Here, the historical centres are filled with lovely lights and Christmas atmosphere all winter long! Tip: it is of course also nice to give a trip as a gift to your partner or friends during the holidays.

Do you want to have a car at your disposal during your city trip? Renting a shared car in Utrecht or other large cities such as Den Bosch and Amsterdam is a piece of cake.

To the ice rink

The real winter atmosphere can be found at the ice rink. Nice and active on the ice and then enjoy a delicious cup of pea soup and a hot chocolate (or maybe a glass of mulled wine!). Many cities choose to build an ice rink during the cold season at popular locations, such as Scheveningen in The Hague or the Museumplein in Amsterdam.

There are also of course permanent ice rinks in sports centres. And who knows, with a bit of luck and some freezing cold you might have natural ice at a pond, ditch or canal close to home this winter!
