This month in focus: Houtmoed

We love Maaike and what she does with Houtmoed. Her positivity and enthusiasm are infectious, for that reason alone follow her on Instagram ! Maaike prefers to design and make beautiful and sustainable home accessories. Her designs seem simple, but are incredibly ingenious! In addition to her passion for Houtmoed, she also enjoys her family and her part-time job as a manager in the social domain. Not only does she have an engineering degree as an industrial product designer and training as a furniture maker, but she also has several HBO certificates in Social Work. A beautiful combination that you will certainly see in Houtmoed. The undisputed Happlify Crew webshop of the month! We asked Maaike a number of questions, would you like to read along?

How did you come up with the idea to start Houtmoed?

During my years as an employed designer, more and more production was moved to China. Because it was cheaper. Partly because there are no strict environmental standards there, partly because the people there work in appalling conditions (sometimes there wasn't even a toilet, but a bucket in the corner next to your workplace).

There must be another way, I thought, so I founded Houtmoed. A webshop for world improvers! Full of sustainable home accessories, made with local materials and my own Dutch hands.

What is your current favorite product and why?

I'm currently working on some great designs that make me so happy! But I won't reveal that yet ;)

The side tables are my all-time favorite, because they combine my love for technical design and furniture making. But secretly it feels a bit like you have a favorite child, and that's actually not done. Haha.

What do you enjoy most about running Houtmoed?

Besides happy customers, what I enjoy most about running an online store is the enormous variety of tasks. No day looks the same. For example, I can use my creativity in designing and writing blogs. On days when my head is overflowing, it's wonderful to be able to work with my hands and I also really enjoy ending the day with packing orders and a walk to the post office.

How do you keep your webshop/collection interesting for your customers?

Of course, by creating new designs and keeping customers involved in that design process. Color also makes me very happy, so the 'classics' in the shop regularly appear in a new color. I also regularly write blogs to keep things fun and inspiring on the website. I really enjoy writing about everything that has to do with living and creativity.

What do you think of Happlify?

I am a big fan of Happlify myself, I regularly visit the site to get a nice dose of happiness. Also in terms of web shops you know that they are genuinely cheerful brands, so that reliability is nice. It is an honor to have been among all those other great brands from the start!

Is there anything else we should know about Houtmoed?
