It's time. The first school holidays are over and then 'normal' life begins again. Although nothing seems normal this year, it's still good to adopt some healthy habits. Because making and keeping your body and mind healthy and strong is the least you can do for yourself.
Below are some great tips for getting back into sports.
Tip 1 - Find out what suits you
Choices, choices, choices! Everything is possible in the field of sports, but (re)starting sports is easiest if you find something that suits you well, your personality, abilities, finances, schedule and goal.
Shame
Totally agree. For example, I have just completed an annual Basic-Fit subscription, but I haven't even been there three and a half times in that entire year! Shame. Now corona time also counts, but it is embarrassingly little. In those almost four times I discovered that I hated it. The first time was fun, we agreed to play sports with a few mothers from school. There were few other people there, it was fun and I was overwhelmed by the possibilities. Then we found out that no one could really meet at the same time every week, I got a burning headache during a spinning session, I didn't feel relaxed one evening surrounded by only men... and not to mention that I felt like a hamster on a treadmill. If you could generate electricity with it, fine, but I thought it was all SO pointless.
Floating for a good wave
This year I learned (!) to surf and went running in nature. The first one in particular makes me very happy. It's so cool to practice a sport on and in the sea. The sea doesn't do what you want, 'you just have to make do with it'. Sometimes you wait a long time for a good wave, only to mess it up. But if you manage to stand up and surf it out: as happy as a child. I now do running to stay in shape. In the open air, with sun and rain. It took a while to find some nice sports. But then you have something.
Tip 2 - Schedule exercise
Once you have decided which sports suit you and you have found a training buddy, plan your sports for the near future. If something is on your agenda, there is probably less temptation to cancel the appointment with yourself and/or your training buddy. You might move it every now and then, but that's better than not planning anything and not finding the time or motivation at the last minute.
No planning = no exercise
That planning is also SO true: no planning = no exercise. With me then. So surfing has become a weekly surf lesson at Surf School Scheveningen (TIP!). Every Friday and/or Thursday morning I lie on a board next to the Pier. As simple as that. I run with an app that subtly lets me know that it is now time to run the next lap. The app I use is C25K .
Tip 3 - Invest in good sports equipment
When running, good shoes can help prevent injuries. When hiking, hiking socks are important to prevent blisters. Exercising in a cotton shirt that does not help dissipate heat properly can be irritating. And matching accessories such as a good backpack, sports towel, own yoga mat or water bottle are also important. Don't know what a useful outfit is, or which accessories are really important? Ask your gym or yoga school, running club, friends, or look online.
