For years we have wanted to have one ourselves Experience Krampuslauf somewhere in Tyrol and while we were looking for the best place, we came across the Krampuslauf Rotterdam! A Krampuslauf in our own country, how cool is that?! Unfortunately, we won't be able to experience it ourselves this year on November 22nd (and we're a bit disappointed about that), but if you like parties, Sinterklaas, tradition and scary - maybe you will. Why? You can read that below. In this blog post we delve into the world of Krampus, the origins of the Krampuslauf and the Rotterdam twist that makes this tradition extra special.

On November 22, it is time again for the Krampuslauf Rotterdam, an annual event that has given a special twist to the traditional Sinterklaas celebration since 2013. The Krampuslauf revolves around the figure of 'Krampus', a mythological companion of Sinterklaas, who originated in Austria. But what makes the Krampuslauf of Stichting Kracom so special? And why is it so nice that this tradition has acquired its own unique character in Rotterdam? Watch this video where Daryl Grootfaam explains it.

What is Krampus?

Krampus is a figure from the Alpine countries, especially Austria, where he has been known for centuries as the 'evil' counterpart of Sinterklaas. In contrast to the friendly Saint, Krampus is a beastly creature who punishes naughty children. His appearance is frightening: he often wears horns, a hairy cloak, and has a wild, devilish appearance. In the Alpine countries, Krampus is often depicted with chains and bells, with which he announces the arrival of Sinterklaas. While Sinterklaas hands out presents to the good children, it is Krampus who calls the naughty children to order.

The Origin of Krampuslauf

The Krampuslauf is a parade that originates from the Alpine countries and takes place annually around Sinterklaas. During these parades, participants dress up as Krampus and parade through the streets, complete with scary masks and costumes. It is a visual spectacle that brings out the dark side of the Sinterklaas tradition. The Krampuslauf is not a children's festival, but a folk festival that revolves around tradition, excitement and a touch of fear, making it a special experience for adults as well.

Krampuslauf in Rotterdam: a local legend since 2013

Since 2013, the Krampuslauf has found its place in Rotterdam, where the event has been organized with great enthusiasm ever since. What makes this version of the Krampuslauf so unique is the Rotterdam twist that has been given to it. In Rotterdam, Krampus is not just an import figure; he has developed into 'the Kralinger', a version of the Krampus that is connected to local folklore.

In Rotterdam, Krampus is associated with the mythology surrounding the Kralinger Plas, an important nature reserve in the city. The Kralinger, as he is called here, is a water creature that originates from the old Rotterdam proverb: “as old as the road to Kralingen”. This connection with local history gives the Rotterdam Krampuslauf a unique identity that you won’t find anywhere else.

A mix of old and new traditions

During the Krampuslauf Rotterdam, Sinterklaas runs with a group of 15 to 25 Kralingers. These figures combine the beastly appearance of Krampus with the courteous qualities of Zwarte Piet. The Kralinger is an impressive appearance: he roars and growls like an animal, but can also be friendly and courteous. He punishes the naughty children, but gives treats to the good children. This balance between strictness and friendliness makes the Kralinger a fascinating figure that evokes both fear and wonder.

Deeper roots in Rotterdam mythology

In recent years, the Rotterdam Krampuslauf has delved further into local mythology. In 2017, a link was even made with the old symbols of the Delftsche Poort: the Maasgod and the Rottenymph. These figures, who are seen as the myth parents of Rotterdam, also immediately became the parents of the Kralinger. This connection with the old river gods of the city gives the Krampuslauf an extra dimension and strengthens the ties with local history.

In 2019, the Kralinger even got a place in the official Sinterklaas exhibition 'Who comes all the years' in Apeldoorn, which shows how much this unique Rotterdam variant of Krampus has conquered its own place in Dutch folklore.
