I (Mariko) came up with Happlify on a dull day somewhere in the tail of winter ten years ago. I remember well that it was drizzling outside and the sky was mouse gray. Now I am generally positive by nature, but if the sunlight takes too long, my fuse becomes very short, I burn faster and everything is very difficult. How nice would it be if I had an instant solution to feel happy again?
Happlify started as a box of happiness that you could buy at the Applepiepieces webshop (who now has another new, nice owner: Sandra). It became a kind of 'first aid package', the solution: a box with 10 bags containing simple tips, gifts and assignments to make you happy in a simple way.
This was the very first performance that was still called 'Think happy thoughts' at the time.
Touching stories
It worked like the fire brigade. The packages were ordered quite a lot, it turned out to be a great idea and a lot of people were made happy with it. We have received many touching stories that brought us to tears ourselves. When after a few years the juice seemed out, we put Happlify aside for a while. It turned out not to be a profitable project in the long run and -unfortunately- the chimney had to burn. If I ever win the lotto, I will immediately start sending gold bags in boxes again. Or... when we find another way!
The problem remained
Over the years I noticed that the need for feel good, small happiness and simplification remains. We live in a great time in which everything seems to be possible and allowed. You can start a business from scratch, right at home with a smartphone. We don't know a second later when something happens on the other side of the world. Our lives take place online much more often than we want and the information flow has become MEGA large. We often become paralyzed by the amount and imposed social pressure that has shifted from offline to online.
Two jobs, because two cars, several vacations, a fat mortgage and a lot of stuff. A world in which a lot happens, the media that often only seems to want to show the misery. Too much fake news, too much social media, too many obligations, too much worries… far too much of everything.
The challenge
As a feel-good addict and random act of kindness video collector, you can't do anything for long. My need turns out to be MEGA BIG to help people connect , to make happy and te surprise . How nice would it be if you were regularly reminded how to become happy in a (relatively) simple way? Through good music, hidden cheerful nightlife tips, fun DIY ideas, an experience, sweet video, nice action, beautiful book, feel-good presents, humor and everything positive, free and happy?!
Isn't that already done? Flow, Happinez, countless books… that just exists? Yes and that's fine right?! Those are wonderful magazines that we like to read ourselves. One is just a bit more paper and DIY focused and the other a bit more spiritual. Happlify is digital for the time being and uses completely different angles.
With Happlify, we're going to create a community that I hope can reach as many people as possible who want to wonder by being inspired, laughing and (re)discovering the little things that make you happy.
Everyone happy? That would be nice, but that's never possible. So if the above appeals to you: join us ! Are you not ready (yet)? Free to leave. You're not tied to anything.
