Description : small folded cookie with a wish in it
Country of origin : Japan

In the series about lucky symbols, this time we are talking about the fortune cookie. You probably know them, those cute cookies that you often get after a meal in (American) Chinese restaurants. They have become a real international symbol of luck and mystery. But where do these magical cookies actually come from, and how did they become such a symbol of luck? Read on!

A cookie full of secrets

The fortune cookie has a surprising history. Many people think that these cookies come from China, but nothing could be further from the truth! The origins actually lie in America, with a touch of Japan. At the beginning of the 20th century, fortune cookies were invented by Japanese immigrants in San Francisco. They treated their guests to a sweet cookie with a small note inside - with a positive message or wise saying. These cookies became very popular and conquered their place in Chinese restaurants (USA), where they are now an indispensable part.

The positive messages in the cookies fit perfectly with our search for happiness and prosperity. Each cookie offers a small moment of excitement and surprise. Sometimes it feels like the universe is giving you personal advice!

The role of luck in the fortune cookie

But why do we actually see the fortune cookie as a lucky symbol? It has everything to do with that little piece of paper inside. People often see the message as a hint or prediction of what is to come. Sometimes you get exactly that affirmation that fits your life at that moment, or just that piece of advice that you need. In this way, the cookie becomes not only a treat, but also a source of positive energy and hope.

Opening a fortune cookie is often also a nice social moment, shared with friends or family after a (Christmas) dinner. That only makes the positive associations stronger.

It's one of the few places in the world where fortune cookies are still handmade. You get a unique look behind the scenes. I bought way too many cookies (oops!) and even had my picture taken with the original owner. Lucky me! Oh, and Chinatown is definitely a must if you're in San Francisco!
