You know what I love most about those cold, grey winter days? That they are the perfect excuse to treat yourself to something delicious from the oven. And believe me, nothing makes a grey day cosier than the smell of freshly baked Cherry Danish in your house. Especially when you are sitting inside with a nice cup of tea or coffee!
What is a Cherry Danish?
A Cherry Danish is a Danish pastry consisting of light, buttery puff pastry with a sweet/sour filling of cherries and pastry cream. Sounds like something only a baker can make, right? But I can tell you: with a few simple ingredients and an oven, you can easily conjure up this Danish delicacy in no time. Hello fika!
Cherry Danish recipe
Ingredients (for 10 Cherry Danish)
- 1 package of frozen puff pastry with 10 separate sheets
- 1 jar or can of cherries in syrup (for example Hak Taart & vlaaifruit cherries, which has already thickened somewhat)
- 1 package of pastry cream (for example from AH or Dr. Oetker, prepared according to the packaging)
- 1 egg (beaten, for brushing)
- Powdered sugar (optional for a festive finish)
Preparation method
-
Prepare your ingredients:
Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C for a fan oven). Line a baking sheet with baking paper and let the puff pastry thaw a little.
-
Make the pastry cream :
Prepare the pastry cream according to the instructions on the package and set aside.
-
Form the Danish :
Place each square on the baking sheet and fold the edges in slightly to create a rim. Or cut a corner in the dough and fold to the other side, as in the photo.
-
Fill in the Danish :
Place a generous tablespoon of pastry cream in the center of each puff pastry square. Then add a generous tablespoon of cherry filling on top of the cream.
-
Finish :
Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the beaten egg for a nice golden brown color. Then bake the Danish in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy. Keep a close eye on it!
-
Optional finishing touch :
After cooling, sprinkle the pastries lightly with icing sugar.
Serve and enjoy
Let the Cherry Danish cool down a bit (they are best when still slightly warm) and serve with coffee or tea of your choice. Whether you are enjoying a fika moment for yourself or sharing with others, this Cherry Danish is guaranteed to be a hit.
